Use the Food Pantry (If You Want To)

The MATC Food Pantries at each of the 5 campuses have captured my heart. What's not to love? If you need help supplementing your groceries they have all sorts of food to share! Noodles, stuffing, canned beans, canned soup, coffee grounds. They also have some varieties of frozen foods, and even milk and eggs occasionally. If you are a student and have any insecurities about food, then this is the place for you. I use it all the time! In fact this past Christmas both the stuffing, and the green bean casserole came to the Elsa-household courtesy of the MATC food pantry

There are however a few misconceptions about food pantries that I think should be addressed. First and foremost I think we in The United States have some real issues to sort through about how we perceive poverty and how help is distributed. You as a student may think that you are some level of poor, but not that level of poor, and I think you would do well to wick those concerns from your mind! If you need help please ask for it. Needing help is not a moral failing.

The MATC Food Pantry exists to help provide MATC students with assistance. There are 5 separate food pantries on all five MATC campuses and all you need to do to access them is to give someone at the front desk your student ID number. Cooking meals at home is the quickest way to save money for other bills, it can also be fun, and is great for your mental health as well!

Cans and nonperishable food items are not the only service available at the MATC Food Pantry. Did you know that the food pantry also stocks diapers and menstrual products as well? Have you also heard about the meals program offered by the college for the downtown campus? It’s one of the coolest things that I have ever heard of! Chef Paul Carrier teaches a class called Food Advocacy, and his students make use of extra food from the culinary program, as well as certain donations the Food Pantry receives and transforms them into premade meals, that are available on a first-come-first-serve basis for students who use the food pantry. Unfortunately these meals go quickly despite being limited to 1 or 2 per student. This program rules, and everyone should know about it!
